What is a Wet Riser?
A wet riser is a system of pipes and valves designed to provide a pressurised water supply for fire fighting purposes within a building. Unlike dry risers, wet risers are filled with water at all times, ready for immediate use in the event of a fire emergency. Wet risers are especially useful in buildings where a consistent and readily available water supply is assured. They are an integral part of fire safety systems, providing a reliable and immediate source of water for the Fire Brigade’s efforts, which can be critical in high-rise buildings or structures where fire can spread rapidly. Like dry risers, wet risers also require regular maintenance and inspections to ensure their functionality in case of an emergency.
Water Supply
Wet risers are typically connected to a dedicated water supply, such as a water tank or a pressurised water main within the building. This water supply ensures a constant source of water in the system.
Pipes and Valves
A wet riser system consists of vertical pipes, valves, and outlets strategically located throughout the building. These pipes are kept filled with water, hence the term ‘wet.’
Fire Hose Connection
On each floor, there are outlets or fire hose connections that are connected to the wet riser system. These connections are easily accessible and allow the Fire Brigade to attach their hoses directly to the system.
Fire Brigade Water Supply
In the event of a fire, firefighters can connect their hoses to the nearest wet riser outlet on the floor closest to the fire. Since the system is continuously filled with water, there’s no need to pump water into the system as in the case of a dry riser.
Water Distribution
Once connected, the pressurised water flows through the wet riser system’s pipes to the location, allowing the Fire Brigade to use it to suppress the fire.

Wet Riser Systems
Wet risers are pipework permanently charged with water, always ready for use in emergencies. This stands in contrast to dry risers, which rely on water being pumped through them via the inlet breaching valve from a fire service appliance.
Water supplied to wet risers comes from dedicated pressure pumps and tanks in an on-site pumphouse. The system is complete with pressure-reducing landing valves strategically placed on each floor.
wet Riser Inspections
For buildings situated 50 meters above the level accessible to fire and rescue vehicles, wet risers should be installed. This ensures an immediate and constant water supply at a high level, as the pumping pressure required to charge the riser exceeds what a fire service vehicle can provide.
Regular inspections and testing of wet risers are essential to ensure that the equipment functions correctly and is ready for use. Problems can have severe implications in the event of a fire and are typically caused by vandalism, blockages or pipework failures, connection failures, or outlets being left open.
